About me as a therapist

As a therapist, I aim to provide a non-judgmental, supportive and compassionate space where you feel safe to discuss difficult topics and concerns. During our meetings, I will try to help you gain a better understanding of the difficulties you experience (e.g., based on psychological models), and help you become effective in managing these outside of therapy. My approach is evidence-based using cognitive-behavioral (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), schema therapy, and compassion-focused therapy (CFT) tools and approaches depending on the situation and individual.

About my therapy sessions

I am available for a free initial phonecall to discuss the nature of your concerns before booking a session. The initial session/s focus on understanding your difficulties, and therefore I will be asking you questions and may ask you to fill in a psychological questionnaire or two. At the beginning of therapy, we will also discuss therapy goals together. Throughout our meetings, I will listen, offer validation and support, and offer you tools and alternate perspectives that can help you manage difficulties that you experience. I may give you tasks to do in-between sessions or ask you to fill in a diary (i.e.) to record feelings/thoughts throughout the week, if you are open to it. Every client is different, and we will be evaluating your well-being and adjusting the approach depending on what works or does not work for you.

My professional background and knowledge

I hold a Bachelor and Master of Science in clinical psychology from Leiden University in the Netherlands, and a neuroscience background gained during my propaedeuse at Maastricht University. My education has equipped me with important knowledge on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, I have had additional training in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), short-term interpersonal therapy, schema therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and compassion-focused therapy (CFT), and working with neurodiversity (i.e., ASD, ADHD).

My work experience includes working with individuals suffering from difficulties related to depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, traumatic experiences and childhood traumas, relationship difficulties (esp. in multicultural families), and immigration stress, among other. I have also experience working with couples, aiding conflict resolution and communication problems, among other.

Client group

As I have firsthand experience of the difficult experiences that can emerge as an expat, it is my passion to help foreigners living in Finland. Although I have a keen interest in working with expats, I am happy to work with individuals regardless of background. This means you can contact me as a native Finn living in Finland, an expat living in Finland, or as a Finn living abroad through online work. It may also be possible for me to meet expats living abroad, depending on the situation.

I also welcome individuals with type 1 diabetes who are looking for psychological support from a professional with first-hand experience and understanding of this autoimmune disease. I warmly invite you to contact me if you are in need of psychological help as a type 1 diabetic.
