In my training I have been taught several different orientations of psychotherapy and strive to collaborate and adjust my way of working to fit the individual needs of each client. I value a trusting therapeutic relationship in which you feel able to be yourself and talk freely about what is on your mind and also about your thoughts and wishes concerning the treatment.
I draw on scientific knowledge and try to incorporate it with the unique background and needs of each person. I focus not just on what is being said but the tones and body language that accompany the words. I tend to be fairly active while still wanting to ensure you have space to express yourself and that you are feeling heard.
At first, I will try to get to know you and you'll have a chance to see how you feel about working with me. We'll try to get an idea of what is most important to focus on and what would be good goals to work towards.
The ways of working can vary. Often the aim is to help you feel comfortable enough to be in touch with some of your difficult feelings in session so we can process them together. This safe experiencing and processing can enable new perspectives and change. Experiencing difficult feelings can feel daunting though, so you get to set the pace.
In practice, we will talk together. At times, we may use exercises or incorporate body-oriented techniques to explore feelings. Sometimes, we may use paper and pen to help conceptualize things and we may agree on small tasks or exercises in between sessions. It really depends on what seems to be most helpful to you and for your goals.
